Berlin Wall

 Berlin Wall

The Germans started construction on the wall in 1961, and finished in 1966. It was to permanently seperate West Germany from East Germany to ‘protect’ the East Berliners and Germans. Let me just explain something. Germany was split in two, but because Berlin was on the East side, they split that too. You could travel from West Germany through East Germany to West Berlin, but you couldn’t get off at East Germany. There was a wall around West Germany, yet they had more freedom then the East Berliners who weren’t trapped. East Germany was a communist country and West Germany was a democratic country. Many people tried to escape but the SED, the secret Soviet police, went around and foiled peoples plan and put them in jail. People’s freedom was limited and the police arrested innocent people. The towers around the wall and in the no man’s land shot people trying to escape.

  1. You write super well Lucy. Isn't it ironic that the people inside the wall were the ones with the freedom. There is a parable in that. grandad.
